The "To Market, to Market to Buy a Fat Pig!" Story

It was an ordinary day. Just finished putting the groceries away. I evidently am one of the 31% of males who is the primary grocery shopper for the family. And, I enjoy it! I get to pick out what I want to eat for the week. No surprises! More and more men are doing the grocery shopping, but I must admit that since I normally have more time than Carol during the weekdays, she appreciates that I will do the shopping. Every Sunday, when the newspaper arrives, I go through all the inserts to find the coupons for the items we usually buy. I do enjoy going to Central Market in downtown Lancaster on Friday from time to time for local vegetables, fresh fish as well as a fat pig and then will travel to Roots' Market on Tuesday for baked goods. Always seem to find my way to the sandwich stand at Roots for a fried oyster sandwich on white bread; just one oyster, please! My grocery chain by choice is Giant which is about two minutes from my house. Adequate store and I know most of the people who work there. Ray, the butcher, will give me some of the best fillets when I ask him. And, the check-out people all know that I like paper bags for packing and most times they clear away when I show up, since they know I like to pack my own bags. I went to school in Philadelphia in 1963 to learn how to pack grocery bags and most of the baggers at the Giant just throw the stuff in. And, I have a shopping list made just for the store which you may remember I wrote about a few months ago. At times I will travel ten minutes to the Giant at the Lancaster Shopping Center, because they have a much larger selection of food and usually have a few stands set up for taste-testing. One block south of that Giant is Weaver's store where I sometimes go to buy meats and cheese and usually pick up a few scones for breakfast. About a half-mile north of the Giant is Stauffer's Market and they have a great selection of veggies and fruits inside the front door as well as some of the best apple dumplings in Lancaster, other than my wife's, of course. Oh yeah, when I want to buy the best BBQ chicken in the area, I head to Costco. Usually pick up a bag of bird seed and a few packages of muffins when I hit that store, as I eat my way through the aisles. I read an article recently that said that "Men's shopping tendencies are causing food-makers to look at a different set of opportunities, as men appear to be less hurried in stores and more prone to impulse purchases than woman." I can see that they never went grocery shopping with me. I have my list and I give myself a set amount of time before I want to be back in the car. So don't get in my way, and if I happen to see you in the store, don't be annoyed if I can't talk for long. I hit every aisle, every time, and in the same order and usually toss what I pick off the shelf into the cart, which bugs the heck out of my wife when she shops with me. And about that, when we shop together we take twice as long since she has to stop and look at everything and we ALWAYS buy more than we need. Just leave those chips on the shelf, dear! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
