The "Elementary Romance" Story
It was an ordinary day. Talking with a few of the people who went to high school with me. Talked about a variety of things and then the dance club came up. Ah, the good old dance club. That would have been in 6th grade. Let's see, about 1956, to be exact. My mom and dad decided I needed to have some social enrichment. I agree that I was a the shyest person on earth, but having to dance with girls would be a killer. Marilyn, a girl in my class lived around the corner from me on Liberty street. We walked to school together and I had a big crush on her throughout elementary school. Not sure how she felt about me, but our parents signed us both up for the dance club. Once a month during the school year one of the parents would hold the dance at their house. Many families had basement recreation rooms, so they were the usual hosts of the dances. There were about eight boys and eight girls in the dance club and you usually danced with the same girl every time you went to the dance club. Marilyn was my partner. I was in heaven for two hours every month. I wasn't a very good dancer, and I'm still not. At the end of the year the dance club ceased to exist. I reverted back into my shell again. I still had a crush on Marilyn, but when we entered Jr. High, she found older boys who had an interest in her. I eventually outgrew my shyness, allegedly, but still can't dance a lick. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
