The "So, Who's Been Pooping on Your Handle?" Story
It was an ordinary day. Just got back from the grocery store. Last night on the local news I saw a story about fecal bacteria - that is, germs from poop. 72% of shopping carts in the USA have been found to have fecal bacteria on the handles. Wow! Now, they only tested a total of 85 carts in four states, but 61 of those carts had poop on the handles. How on earth can the handles get poop on them? Do that many people poop when they go to the grocery store and then not wash their hands? The bacteria that is in poop is the E. coli variety which can cause severe infections, but so far no disease outbreaks have yet been traced to shopping carts. Well, today I did the weekly grocery shopping. Went to the new Giant store near my house. The one with the bank, the emergency care center, the restaurant and who knows what else in it. Figured since it is new I might have a better chance to avoid the poop on the handles. As I entered the front door, there was a couple wiping down the handle of their cart with a wipe from the station the store has at the entrance. Ah ha! Must have seen the same news clip I did last night. So I grabbed a wipe and did the same thing to my cart. Matter of fact, I used a whole bunch of them and really did a good job on it. As I was finishing, in walks another customer and she sees me with the wipe. "You watched the same show that I did last night, I see," she said. "Yep, and I'm not going to chance getting someone else's poop on my hands," I responded. And .... she did the same thing. Bet they will need to replace the wipe container multiple times in the next week or two. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
