The "Friends To All" Story

It was an ordinary day. Raining, and Creamsicle, our outdoor cat wants in from the cold and rain. He has become a constant companion for Carol and me, but still doesn't want to give up his outdoor freedom. He is happy to visit with us for a short time, but even during bad weather, likes to go outside to explore. This morning I allowed him to visit with me while I get him his morning meal of canned cat food. He rubs against my leg and looks at me with that 'hurry up' face. Not long before I open the back door again and both he and the food disappear outside. He has made two visits to the vet now for shots and a check-up. We were told he was good for another year, which I'm sure he won't mind. We have had stray cats appear at our back door quite a few times, since we have lived at the "Beach House." I have been able to trap almost all of them and take them to the Humane League of Lancaster County for hopefully, adoption. I give a donation when I take them knowing full well that they will have shots and a visit with a vet before adoption. Some, I'm sure, will also go through either being spayed or neutered, I hope. This past summer the Humane League ran a special campaign to help with the adoptions of cats in Lancaster County. Called it "Cats of the Caribbean." They used the movie poster for Pirates of the Caribbean and put a cat's face where Johnny Depp's face was in the poster. The results of the campaign were outstanding with a 14% increase in adoptions from previous years. Almost 1000 cats were adopted into households. Because the campaign was so successful, they received the Nonprofit Innovation Award and a $2,000 grant from the Central Penn Business Journal. Great award for a great non-profit. As soon as I heard the name of the campaign I was interested. Carol and I always visit and give a donation to animal shelters on the many different Caribbean islands that we have visited. Our next trip to St. Martin will see us return to visit withBernadine Ali who runs a shelter for cats and dogs. You can just see her love for the strays that roam around her outdoor rum store. Yep, rum. Not only do we give a donation for the shelter, but we naturally have to buy a few bottles of the Ma Doudou flavored rum which can cure all you ills. Anyway, the vision of the Humane League of Lancaster County is to provide a humane community where all pets are protected and wanted. Please give them a helping hand or a donation if you can. They are located at 2195 Lincoln Hwy. East. I'm sure they, as well as the animals, will appreciate your contribution. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
