The "One Proud Little Boy" Story
It was an ordinary day. Waiting on a call from my son, telling me how my grandson Caden did in his first Pinewood Derby. For those who have no idea what a Pinewood Derby is, the Scouts sponsor the annual event where a block of wood, two metal rods and four black plastic wheels are hewed into a race car for competition against other members of your scout troop or den. Caden and his dad had a great time building the car over the last few weeks and he looked forward to the event at scouts. But, he is sometimes, no ...... most times, so apprehensive about new experiences that he makes himself sick. I think it is hereditary, since I was like that for most of my youth as was my youngest son. Anyway, Carol and I were in the car when she got a text pix sent to her. Opened it and there was this photo of a big trophy! She then realized it was from Caden's day and we knew right away that something grand had happened. She called and found out that he had placed 2nd in his pack and that the 1st and 2nd place cars from his pack would go against the 1st and 2nd place cars from the other packs to determine the best car in the troop. I think I have the troop and pack stuff correct, but if not, I think you have the idea. Well, in another hour or so we found that Caden had come in 4th place out of eight in the entire troop. And, he had the biggest smile on his face my son, Derek, said. He was one proud, little boy! Apprehension always seems to fade with success. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy. PS - top photo was when I went to visit to see the trophy and Caden had just come in from playing (notice the red cheeks) while the second one was taken after I realized I missed part of the trophy in the 1st pix. I know he looks like he has a gold mustache and beard, but didn't realize that until I got home.
