It was an ordinary day. Carol and I are starting to prepare for our upcoming vacation with our traveling friends Jerry and Just Sue to Paradise Island in the Bahamas. We thought we would enjoy staying at the Atlantis Resort until we checked into the price and found we would have to sell one of the cars to pay for the vacation. Instead we chose the Riu
Palace Paradise Island for our home base during the couple of weeks we will be living in ....... PARADISE! The Riu was founded by the Spanish Riu family in 1953 and now sports resorts on many Caribbean Islands. The cost was reasonable and the resort is all-inclusive. That means that all our food and drinks will be at no cost during our entire stay. Our travel agent, Karen, told us that the price of food on Paradise Island as well as in the capital of Nassau is extremely expensive, so the all-inclusive will be a great buy for us. We have traveled to all-inclusive resorts before in Jamaica and Antigua and found that both the quality and quantity of food was very good. We also have taken a few cruises in which the food is included, but in that case you have no choice but to eat in their restaurants while at sea. The Riu features 5 restaurants as well as 4 bars including a swim-up bar and a sports bar. And they also include 24 hour room-service if we choose to go that route. Now here comes the problem with all of this. We may have to pack some additional clothes in our suitcase to take into account that we could possibly gain quite a bit of weight during our stay. Most of the time, at an all-inclusive, someone is wondering around the resort offering you some type of treat or drink. If you care to have a snack in one hand and a beer or mixed drink in the other, you could possibly do that the entire day, except during breakfast, lunch or dinner naturally when you will be seated at a table somewhere eating a full meal. I found that in Jamaica I drank more Pina Coladas than I did in all previous trips combined. Not a good thing when I know that the drugs that I take to be able to function pain-free react negatively with alcohol. I'm thinking that maybe I should switch to Mojitos instead for this vacation! And, what's to stop me from eating 3 or 4 desserts when they are all sitting there waiting for me to scoop them up. Matter of fact I just may make desserts my main course on a few days. Don't you tend to overeat when you go to a buffet? You want to get your money's worth so you pack in as much as you can. I tend to do the same by submitting to the lobe in my brain were irrationality rules. I just have to remember that prudence should not be discarded, eating rules should not give way to lawlessness and "NO" actually means ........ well, "NO". Just in case, I'm going to pack a pair of sweat pants! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
