The "Proud Scout, Dad and Tampah" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Standing along 4th Street in Williamsport watching the Nittany Highland Pipe Band walk by with their kilts and bagpipes when I heard this ringing noise.  Then I heard it again.  Carol looks at me and says, "Your phone is ringing."  "Oh yeah!" I replied.  Grabbed it from my pocket and opened it to take the call when I realized my oldest son Derek had just sent me a photo of my grandson Caden with a big smile on his face, holding a trophy.  Today was the day that the Pinewood Derby was being held at Caden's Cub Scout Pack meeting.  Yearly event that Carol and I attended the last two years when Caden nearly won the 1st Place trophy in his Den competition.  When both our sons were in Cub Scouts they also participated in the yearly event where the boys are supposed to team with their father or other family member to create their car for the competition.

trophies for the Pinewood Derby.  In the

I can still remember the good times that we had making the cars and watching our sons race them at our local pack meeting.  Not quite sure, but I don't think they ever won the event or even placed in the top three in the race.  Well, the photo I'm looking at of Caden and his trophy is accompanied with a message from our son that read: Just took first place in the Bear Den competition.  Will race against all the other winners next.  Derek.  Well, Caden didn't win the race against all the other Den winners, but he was a happy boy with his third place trophy he got in the Pack 181 competition.  Big achievement for a young boy and his proud dad.  Only wish I had been there to share in the excitement and competition.  Finally took a photo of Caden at his home with his two really neat trophies and his car.  Tampah is proud of you!  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
