The "A Time Honored Tradition" Story

LDub's family.  Seated: Caden, Courtney, Derek, Carol and Camille.
Standing: LDub, Dave, Brynn and Barb.
It was an ordinary day.  Just had our photo taken at Brown's, a donut and breakfast restaurant on the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ.  Making a visit to Brown's on our first morning at the beach has become a tradition for Carol and me as well as our children Derek (wife Barb and son Caden) and Brynn (husband Dave and girls Courtney and Camille).  Most years our other son Tad makes a visit for a few days, but he has a trip planned for later in the summer and didn't make it this year.
Brown's Donuts on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ.
Brown's Donuts was opened on the Ocean City boardwalk in 1976 when Marjorie and Harmon Brown, teachers from Pennsyl- vania, decided to open a place that they could run in the summer months when they weren't teaching.  They opened their donut place and operated it with their five children.  The restaurant is now in its second generation, operated by their son Jim and his wife Melissa.

Carol and I were attracted to the place years ago when we traveled to Ocean City with our young kids.  Have made a stop on the first morning of our vacation ever since that time in the late 70s after the place opened.  The donuts are cake donuts, made in the small area next to the lunch counter in plain sight of the patrons.
Adding the topping.
Small machine forms the donuts from the batter and they make their way through the cooking oil, up a metal ramp and into a bowl where someone takes then and dips them in either vanilla, chocolate or honey.  Some also are covered with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
My plate of donuts!
Easy to have one of each before you realize that your stomach is loaded with donut batter.  Today, after eating breakfast and celebrating Camille's birthday, our waitress was kind enough to snap a photo of our family.  But alas, we will return again to either Brown's or to another favorite, Oves Donuts, also on the Boardwalk, to indulge in the sugary temptation of cake donuts while on our family vacation.  After all, it is a family tradition!  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
