The "My Son's Classic Muscle Car" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Just finished taking a few photos of my son Tad's 1972 Chevelle SS.  It was in 1964 that Chevrolet introduced the muscle car that could go from 0-60 in 6.0 seconds.  The Super Sport or SS model was an upscale version of the regular Chevelle with upgraded wheel covers and vinyl bucket seats.  Neat car that features a 350 cubic inch V8, 4 speed transmission and is brown with a black racing strip on the hood and rear deck and features a black vinyl Naugahyde top.

Pretty neat car that sounds as neat as it looks.  He bought it from a used car lot in Neffsville, PA called Prestige Auto Sales sometime in the mid to late 1990s.  He and I made a trip to look at a beautifully restored light green Chevelle with a 454 CI engine, but the asking price of $33,000 was more than my son wanted to spend for a car.

As we were about to leave the salesman told Tad that they had another Chevelle to the rear of the shop that he may want to take a loot at.  So we walked around to the back and there sat Tad's new car.  Asking price of $10,000 was just at the top of what Tad wanted to spend.  At the time Tad was living with my wife and me and this car was to be his daily driver.  Always knew when he was leaving and coming home because of the rumble of the engine as he pulled in or left the driveway.  His car joined my 1996 Mazda in the driveway, since my '87 Vette and our family car took up the two spaces in the garage.

One morning Tad went out to get in his car and found someone had stolen the chrome beauty rings and center caps from his wheels.  The Police were called, but we never found the culprit who stole them.  Insurance covered most of the cost of a new set  to replace them.  Tad eventually bought his own home and with a two car garage was able to put the Chevelle in one bay and buy another car for his daily driver.  The car still rumbles when it enters my driveway and stills looks as good as when he bought it.  Tad keeps it in immaculate shape, except for a few minor body imperfections, with the help of his good friend and school classmate Josh who runs a garage.  I waited until I was in my 50s before I bought the car of my dreams, so I'm glad that my son can cherish his Chevelle while he has many more years of driving left.  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
