It was an ordinary day. Just finished watching an old episode of the Big Bang Theory. If you have never heard of the American TV show or watched it, it features best friends Leonard and Sheldon who are physicists who work at the California Institute of Technology, but are socially inadequate. They hang out with their friends who seem at times to also be socially inadequate except for Leonard and Sheldon's neighbor Penny. The show I just watched featured friends Howard and Bernadette who wanted to get married before Howard went into space so they went to the courthouse, but before they could get married, the Courthouse closed. So .... they all got online degrees to be ministers and perform the wedding for Howard and Bernadette. My wife, Carol, said to me, "You could have performed the wedding had you been there."
Sounds pretty far fetched, but for those who have been reading this site for years, you may remember that I am an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church. My online Ordination took place on December 15, 2010. At that time I became legally qualified to perform weddings, baptisms, funerals and open my own church. More than likely the characters on the Big Bang Theory became fictional ministers in this religious affiliation. If you have ever read about the Universal Life Church you probably know that over 20 million people around the world have been ordained ministers in the church. There are only two beliefs you must abide by: Do only that which is right and all should be free to worship as they see fit. During my five years as a minister I have not once married anyone, baptized anyone or buried anyone. I also never sent my money into the website for my ULC wallet card, my specially engraved letterhead and envelopes, my printed T-shirt or my framed Ordination Certificate. Oh well, I still believe, as more than likely the characters of the TV show do, that "We Are All Children Of The Same Universe." That is after all the slogan of the Universal Life Church. Actually you can leave a comment if you are in need of my services and I will get back to you! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordianry guy.
