The "That HOT DAY Years Ago" Story
It was an ordinary day. The anniversary of the wedding of Carol and LDub on June 17,1967. Wow! One more year for half a century of wedded bliss!! The day was hot. Really HOT!! And, Carol wore a long-sleeved gown in a church that wasn't air-conditioned. Matter of fact, our reception was next door to the church in the Parish House which wasn't air-conditioned either. We were drenched in sweat. When we left the reception to get in the car our guests threw computer punched pieces of paper that stuck to every part of the body.
But, it didn't matter, since we were married and happy as can be. Feels like just yesterday that we stood in front of Rev. Batchelder and said "I Do!" Well, 49 years ago life seemed so much simpler that it is today. Back then a loaf of bread cost $.22 and a gallon of milk was $1.15. I could have bought a new Ford for $2,724 and filled it with a gallon of gas for $.33. The average income in the United States was $7,305.00 and the Dow Jones Avg. was 879.10 the day before we were married. In sports the Cardinals won the World Series, the Indy 500 was won by A.J. Foyt traveling at 115.2 MPH, the Super Bowl was won by the Packers, the Stanley Cup was won by the Canadians and believe it or not, the NBA title was won by Philadelphia. Lyndon B. Johnson was the President of the United States and his Vice President was Hubert H. Humphrey. The top song was Up, Up and Away by Jimmy Webb, the top movie was In the Heat of the Night, the best actor was Rod Steiger who starred in In the Heat of the Night, and the best actress was Katherine Hepburn who starred in Who's Coming To Dinner? A few of the headlines were: Israel claims victories on three fronts as its air strikes reportedly destroyed any effective Arab Air Power; The American Medical Asso. liberalizes its policy on abortion in the first change by the group since 1871; The F.C.C orders all radio and TV stations carrying advertising for cigarettes to warn of possible dangers; and The Supreme Court rules unanimously that States could not legally bar marriages between whites and non-whites. The world has never been the same since June 17, 1967. For Carol and I it has gotten better with the addition of three children to our family and now three grandchildren. We have been blessed with good friends, good times and relatively good health. And, our love has grown for 49 years. Holy Cow! How old must we be! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
