The "Elephant Ears That Are Bigger Than Real Elephant Ears" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Getting ready for our grandson Caden to help my wife and I cut and bag the yard full of Elephant ear plants that have grown to record size this past summer.  Caden had helped in the spring with the planting of the bulbs and today he will help cut the huge leaves from the plants and dig up the bulbs that must certainly be close to a foot deep in our backyard.  I have done the chore for over 20 years, but find I can't physically do the job anymore so we have enlisted the help of our very muscular grandson to help with the removal of the roots and storage of them until next Spring.  The growing season this Spring and summer has been remarkable.  Carol had a large variety of plants that added color and variety to our back deck as well as the fountain and pond area which we added close to 20 years ago. Take a look at a few of the different ornamentals that have grown in our garden this past summer as well as the blue-ribbon elephant ears.  It was another extraordniry day in the life of an ordinary guy.  PS - Our pond has been the home to one very large goldfish for the past 6 years.  We originally purchased a dozen small goldfish and most became a meal for the local herons, but this one goldfish loved our pond so much that he managed to survive to the point that he is close to 10" in length.  He knows the perfect spots to hide when the herons arrive from time to time.  He even survives the cold winter months when the ice covers the pond to about a depth of 6".
