It was an ordinary day. Reading an article in my local newspaper in early April of 2022 that was seeking an immigrant artist to create a mural that would capture the city of Lancaster’s spirit of welcome. The mural was to decorate the west facade of Ganse Apothecary which is located at 335 W. King St. It is meant to greet drivers and pedestrians as they enter the downtown area of Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the four-way intersection of Charlotte, King, Manor and Strawberry Streets. Funding for the mural was to come from Lancaster County Community Foundation, Landis Homes, Penn Square Rotary Club and the city of Lancaster. Two Dudes Painting Co. was going to provide the supplies for the mural. The selected artist, or artists, was to receive a fee of $15,000. Well, Lancaster City and Church World Service Lancaster selected a Cuban-born artist, Claudia Rojas, to develop the mural along with project manager Shauna Yorty, a local muralist. Despite many delays, the mural was officially dedicated this past Tuesday. City officials, project sponsors and collaborators and the painting’s designer, Claudia Rojas, were among those gathered to celebrate the new artwork on the eastern wall of Ganse Apothecary, 355 W. King Street. Eastern Alliance Insurance Group, one of the project’s sponsors, announced a $12,000 gift from the company to go toward a new public art fund. Lancaster City Alliance’s neighborhood facade improvement program will fund gooseneck lighting that will illuminate the mural. The painting is beautiful and creates a great entranceway into the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Good job, Claudia and to all who have been part of the artwork that adds that extra touch to the entrance of Lancaster. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
