The "Learning from the Master" Story

Artwork by friend James Gallagher
It was an ordinary day.  Carol just finished packing the Christmas decorations in our large blue plastic tubs and re-decorating with beach related items we have collected during our marriage.  A few of the items she placed on the shelves that line our lower level stairs were ceramic pieces that our oldest son, Derek, had made while in high school.  He was a talented artist and found he loved to work in clay.  Jim Gallagher, who taught art in the classroom next to my Graphic Arts classroom and who worked with me as yearbook advisors for years, was Derek's favorite teacher.  Both left-handers, Jim was able to teach Derek the techniques needed to be successful on the potter's wheel as well as developing a variety of different glazes to be used on his work.  Many of Derek's pieces still remain in our house until he one day decides to take possession of them.  Love to look at them so we're not rushing him.  Thought I would show you a few of my favorites and give you an idea of what a high school student can do with the knowledge learned from one of the best art teachers in our state.
