The "fighting for four quarters even though the game's over" Story
It was an ordinary day. And here is my current take on the disgraceful mess in State College, PA. Jerry Sandusky, the accused pedophile, made everyone appear in court today and then decided he didn't want a preliminary hearing and told them he waived his right to the hearing and was ready for his arraignment in January. Those poor witnesses who had to make the trip to Bellefonte, PA for the preliminary hearing have to be angry. They went through all the stress of preparing for their testimony and now they can't face the accused to tell their side. On Sanduskey's exit from the courtroom he yelled to the reporters, "We're going to stay the course and fight for four quarters." Give up Jerry, the game's already over! And Joe, he up and broke his pelvis again. Maybe he thought he would get some more sympathy with the latest injury. You know, Sandusky is not Penn State! Even Paterno and football aren't Penn State. The students and alumni, they are Penn State! I recently read a story in the local newspaper written by Ryan Robinson who writes a weekly column. He is a graduate of Penn State and he is a little, no make that a lot, upset with all the negative publicity that Penn State is getting. He says, "It angers me that one person's actions can wreak heartbreak and other damage on so many people. The possibility of a cover-up at Penn State also sickens me. All that being said, the matter does not alter what it truly means to be a Penn Stater." I didn't even go to Penn State, but I feel bad for all those who did. How one man, and those who have covered up the disgrace he heaped on the school, can cause so much harm is such a shame. The present students and all those who have graduated in years past seem to be paying for his horrendous acts. While visiting our friends Jerry and Sue, who live in State College, one weekend a few years ago, we saw Joe walking on campus. We drove around the block to get another look at him. Would I do that today? You kidding me! For years Joe did things the right way and instilled moral values in his players and those he came in contact with. Too bad he didn't uphold those values in his own life. People can heap scorn on Sandusky and Paterno as well as everyone else involved in the cover-up, but please don't let that tarnish the name of Penn State. The students and alumni don't deserve that. Just remember their battle cry, "WE ARE PENN STATE!" And THEY truly are. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
