The "Are you ready for some Baseball?" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Just finished watching Washington beat Miami in the opener for both teams.  My time of year is finally here.  My favorite past-time, baseball, is once again on TV.  Missed the opening game of the Major League Season yesterday, but I was outvoted, since the NCAA basketball tournament was more popular than baseball, at least to everyone else but me and my son Tad who would rather watch hockey than even baseball.  I have been working on the 2013 Baseball Yearbook for the Manheim Township High School baseball team for the past couple of weeks so I have been getting a running start on the season, but nothing is as exciting as watching my Phils play on the tube.  For those of you who are baseball fans, I have decided that today's story should feature some baseball facts and oddities from when I was a child and was just being introduced to America's Past Time, the All-American game called baseball.  For those who absolutely hate baseball ....... I just can't imagine anyone not liking baseball.  My mom even liked the sport!  OK, here are a dozen Philllies questions to test how much you know about my Phils.  See how you do.

  1. On June 23, 1971 what Phillies pitcher hurled a no-hitter, and hit two home runs in the game.
  2. What Phils pitcher had a great Hall Of Fame career, but oddly his best season was with a team that finished at 59-97. The Philadelphia Phillies finished last and he ended up winning the Triple Crown; Wins 197, ERA 1.97, K 310.  An odd record that will probably never be broken.
  3. What Phils third baseman currently holds the record for the most career homeruns by a batter playing for just one team. He finished off his HOF career with 548 HR's, all with Philadelphia.
  4. Which team has had the most consecutive seasons with 100 or more losses, when they lost 100 games five seasons in a row?
  5. Who is the only player to win a Gold Glove for four different teams?
  6. What 2 third-basemen have hit 400 home runs in the majors?
  7. The Philadelphia franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers.  What league did they play in?
  8. Which Phillies pitcher won 30 games in a season, three different times?
  9. What Philly batter had a .400 batting average four times in his career?
  10. In 1980 the Phils won the World Series with a manager who was in his first year of being a major league manager.  Who was he?
  11. Which of the following greats won more games as a Phillies pitcher:  Steve Carlton, Pete Alexander, Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning?
  12. What Phillies shortstop won 2 Gold Gloves and later became the manager of the team?  Larry Bowa.
Answers: 1: Rick Wise, 2: Steve Carlton, 3: Mike Schmidt, 4: Philadelphia Phillies who accomplished this dubious feat by losing 100 five years in a row, from 1938 to 1942, 5: Bobby Shantz won with the Yankees, Pirates, Cardinals and Phillies, 6: Mike Schmidt from the Phillies (509) and Eddie Mathews from the Braves (486), 7: National League, 8: Pete Alexander, 9: Ed Dehalanty, 10: Dallas Green, 11: Carlton won 241, Roberts won 234, Pete Alexander won 190, Jim Bunning won 100, 12: Larry Bowa.

Well, how'd you do?  You had to get at least one right or you can't be a Phillies fan.  Gotta get back to the TV, since the Phils are getting ready to play the Braves in a few minutes.  Don't want to miss the opening pitch. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
