The "Droning On The HIgh Seas" Story
It was an ordinary day. Recently checking out the half dozen or so webcams that I have bookmarked on my computer to see what the weather is like on the island of St. Martin where Carol and I will travel in a few months for vacation. Beaches look great, but still slightly windy. Then I hit the link to "Travel Talk Online" (TTOL) to see what others are saying about the island and news worthy events that may be occurring on the island. One that caught my attention was a story about one of the realtors on the island using a drone to capture aerial shots of an amazing villa that is for sale. Place is drop-dead gorgeous and should be for the $3 million price tag.
I read most of the comments that were posted for the link and was surprised that no one mentioned their objections of using drones to videotape private residences. Wasn't too long ago that a story appeared that talked about a realtor in my hometown of Lancaster, PA using a drone to show the expanse of farmland that was for sale. Quite a few letters to the editor followed complaining that it is an invasion of their privacy if a drone would pass over their house. One even said that he would "take it out" if he saw it over his airspace. So, I'm wondering if it really is legal to take aerial shots of a neighbors property? Suppose you have a privately enclosed patio or deck at the rear of your house and enjoy tanning in the nude and while you're laying there this thing hovers over you. Do you have the righs to the airspace over your property as you do the ground beneath you? Could you go in your house and get a gun and "take out" the drone so it can't videotape you? Interesting, isn't it? Well, the video make by the realtor was fantastic and received many great comments as to how well it was done. Many asked technical questions as to having a live feed or the clarity of the video. Then someone mentioned about what's going to happen next with the easy access to drones. One chimed in saying that almost everyone has an iPhone and can video just about anything now, so what's the difference. One even said that there are fishing boats off the coast of many islands where nude bathing is the norm and these boats have no fishing gear on them. What might they be doing? They do have drones that can lift off their deck and capture views of the nearby islands. I have included a few of the drone videos that I found on the Internet to show you how neat they really are and what they can capture that could never be captured before unless you had sophisticated equipment to use. I'm sure a drone isn't inexpensive, but certainly more affordable than aerial cameras in the past. Check out the realtors video and then be amazed with the other drone videos I have included. Would love to have one for my upcoming vacation to capture the true essence of the island from the air. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
