The "Christmas in January" Story
It was an ordinary day. "Sounds of the Seasons" were softly playing on the CD player and the smell of candied sweet potatoes filled the air. Christmas had arrived at LDub's house ..... for the second time. Carol spent the past week preparing for the second coming by dusting the ornaments, nutcrackers, Santas and miniature deer collection. Made the menu for the Friday evening meal and readied the house for our visitors from up North. In this case, up North would mean State College, PA, since that is where our friends and traveling companions Jerry and Just Sue live. We didn't get a chance to share Christmas with them this year so when they finally said they could visit with us the middle of January, Carol decided we would leave all the decorations in place, both inside and outside, and celebrate once again. They arrived mid-afternoon and after spending time looking at all the decorations, we prepared for supper.
Turkey, sweet and mashed potatoes, stuffing, asparagus wrapped in bacon, cranberry and home-made apple sauce as well as pumpkin bread filled the table in our dining room. The table looked great with the red and green tablecloth, bright red plates and goblets and special silverware used only when guests dine at our table. After the meal we made our way to the living room where the nine foot tree was glowing by the wall of windows. The ornaments twinkled, reflecting the light from the hundreds of small clear lights. "Merry Christmas" we all exclaimed as we shared our gifts with each other. My wrapping techniques were commented about, but all in good fun. The weekend was filled with fun and laughter, good times reminiscing about life when it was so much easier and a Christmas we wished would never end. Always that way when good friends share time together! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
