It was an ordinary day. Walking around the Giant Supermarket looking for a few apples that Carol can use to make me homemade apple dumplings. When we were first married over 50 years ago, Carol began using a family recipe to make me apple dumplings. Great meal after a hard day of teaching my high school photography and graphic arts classes. Back then I could easy eat three of her apple dumplings with milk and sugar on them.

The Granny Smith apples that Carol chose. |
Parked the car, put our masks in place and grabbed our reusable bags as we headed in to the store. The first section in this store is the produce section so she began to look for the Akane apples. No where to be found! They had all the recognizable apples such as the Fuji, Red delicious, Golden delicious, Gala and Granny Smith. Once again they had apples that we had never heard of such as Envy, Jazz and Rave. You take those three and the half dozen or so that were listed in the paper and you have a huge selection that neither of us had ever heard of before. She chose the Granny Smith, since that is what she had used for ages to make her apple dumplings. Well the smell when I walked in the kitchen from the garage after mowing the grass was amazing. Smelled a bit like an apple pie, but with a more sugary smell to them. The entire first floor had the amazing smell to it. Washed up, watched a bit of the 5:00 local news and supper was ready. Couldn't handle three of them, but did manage to down two of them. I like to put one in a bowl, poor cold milk over it and after using my spoon to break it apart, I sprinkled a bit more sugar on it. We talked about maybe trying another type of apple the next time to see if we can tell a difference. "How about next week?" I asked. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
