The "Junior High Memories" Story

This building that was constructed in 1875 was known as the
Keystone Hotel.  It eventually became Hauck's Store.

It was an ordinary day.  Looking through a book on the history of Manheim Township (Lancaster County, PA) and saw a photo of a store that brought back memories.  Hauck's Store was located at the corner of Rt. 501N and Valley Road in Neffsville, PA.  One of my classmates' parents ran the store which was maybe 100 yards from the entrance to the Jr./Sr. High School.

It was in 1956 that I starting riding the bus to the school when I entered Jr. High.  I can remember many times when I would get off the school bus and head to the store to pick up a pack of gum or some candy to eat during the day at school.  Place was old, but had just about anything you might find in a general store.  I can remember picking up pencils and notebook paper more than once in order to quickly finish a project or homework for one of my classes.  

The Keystone Hotel later became Hauck's Store. After being the
hotel it was a community center, Funk's Store, Dunkles Store, and
finally Hauck's Store.

Every so often the school would warn student not to cross the road and head to the store before classes, but I don't remember that stopping anyone from making their morning trek to the corner store.  I eventually moved to another school when the district built a new high school and I was moved to that school in 1958.

Missed making the morning runs to Hauck's for supplies and to meet my friends.  The store eventually was demolished and replaced with what is now a Turkey Hill convenience store.  The old store was a landmark in the square in Neffsville, now replaced with a non-descript building that doesn't have the charm and inviting architecture of the old Hauck's Store.  So sad!  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
