The "It Took Sixty Years To Make It Right!" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Just left my Ophthalmologist's office with an entirely new look; No glasses!!  It's been over 60 years since I was able to see without the use of glasses.  I was 12 years old and was preparing for the start of summer baseball season.  A few of the guys in the neighborhood were playing baseball and I noticed I couldn't see the ball until it was almost on top of me.  Mentioned it to my dad and he took me to the eye doctor for a check-up.  Sure enough, I needed prescription glasses for distance.  A week later I was hitting the ball and ready for the start of the Jr. Midget baseball season.

Today I walked out of Dr. Jones' office carrying my glasses in a bag.  I recently wrote about having cataract surgery on my left eye.  Interesting procedure which I thought I would loathe, but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't mind the surgery.  The evening of the surgery I was rather alarmed when I looked in the mirror and saw the size of my pupil, but the next day the pupil had reduced in size and my worries began to subside.

That was two weeks ago and today, after having my eye pressure checked and the vision in my left eye checked, I was ready to see the doctor.  He told me I now have 20/20 vision in my left eye.  We talked about the procedure and he said, "Now that you have better than 20/40 vision in one of you eyes, you don't need to wear glasses anymore."  Seems my one eye works great for closeup while the other now works for distance.

He said it might take some time to adjust to not wearing glasses, but he thought I could handle it.  That's all I needed to hear and as I left his office I was carrying my glasses in a bag.  What a difference from a few days ago when my left eye couldn't adjust to closeup or distance and it also gave a gray cast to my total vision.  For those who are reading this story and have trouble with your vision due to cataracts, don't put off having it corrected any longer.  I too was leery, but not anymore.  Your sight is too precious to not be able to see the world as you should.  You won't be sorry you took my advice.  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
