Other streets closeby were Martha and Juliette. Guess you have an idea why they were called that? So, how did the street or lane where you live get its name? I assume that just about every small town in the United States, or perhaps any location in the world, has a Main Street. If not, maybe it would have a First Street. And, if it has a first street it more than likely has a Second Street and even a Third Street. I often wish I could have lived on Woods Ave. since it would have been so easy to remember where I lived, since it is my last name. Can you figure out why there are streets with names such as Market, Hill, East and State? Lancaster City's Central Market sits on...yep, you guessed it; Market Alley. One of my grandmother's lived on Pine Street in Lancaster since there were many pine trees on the street at one time. And, my other Grandmother lived on Prince Street since a Prince was supposed to have lived there at one time. Nah! I just made that up, but it really could be true. At one time, roads that sat outside of town had no names at all. If the town was small enough you could just tell someone asking for directions to turn left at the first maple tree and go three houses. Then people moved to the other side of the street and it became a bit easier if the street had a name so it was named Friendship Ave. Hey, I could go on and on about why streets and roads were called what they are today.
I would love to give names to all these streets. |
