The "Historical Photo Stories Presented By Mr. Benton Webber: Part l" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Sitting at my desk with my cat Snickerdoodle begging me to scratch his head a bit more.

After a few scratches, he's off to the nearby window to watch the varmits below him in the pine trees.  Began my story for the day which is the first of three stories I have written that feature photographs placed on the Facebook website "Remember When.....in Lancaster, PA" by Benton Webber.  Mr. Webber evidently loves history and posts many very interesting photographic stories for all who visit the website I just mentioned.  The posting today featured photographs showing one of the elementary schools in the Manheim Township School District of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where I grew up, went to school and returned to teach for many more years before retiring from the school in 1999.  The school he featured  in the posting was known as the Eden School which was along the New Holland Pike which is on the eastern side of Manheim Township.  It is situated in the small area known as the village of Eden.  On an 1864 map of the township, the school appears on the west side of the turnpike, near the present location of Ray's Automotive Service.  Even before this building was erected, classes, as well as worship services - were held in a multi-purpose meetinghouse at the site of the current fire hall.  Mr. Webber posted a later version of the Eden School and I also found a few other photos of the school that was built in 1849.  The two photos I found were in the the booklet, "Manheim Township Schools - The First 100 Years which was written by C. Nat Netscher and designed by the author of this story.  Check out the visual photographs as well as the typed information that Mr. Webber included in his posting.  As I mentioned, this is the first of three visual stories that I will post in the next couple of days.  Other stories are on the Stehli Silk Mill in Manheim Township as well as on the intersection where PA Route 30 intersects PA Route 501.  It was another extraordinary day n the life of an ordinary guy.  PS - Click on images to enlarge them.
