It was an ordinary day. Weather is beginning to get warmer after a winter that seemed to be on the mild side with very little snow and only a few days of really cold weather. As a child, I would have been extremely upset since there was very little snow for sledding and building snow forts in the backyard. It's been more than half-a-century since I have enjoyed snow the way I used to enjoy it. Now I wish for warm winters with very little snow since it is more of a chore to have to shovel the white stuff than it used to be. I know...winters were designed for piles of snow and school snow days. I loved when school was closed, both as a child an as an adult while teaching high school at Manheim Township High School. Missing school days was always fun and listening to the TV and radio to see if the schools were closed has never grown old. But I have aged quite a bit and now snow tends to be an enemy rather than the friend it used to be. Having to drive in the snow and shovel the white stuff has become harder to handle in the past couple of years. That is one reason why my wife and I recently decided to sell our home and move to a retirement community in Lancaster, PA so that someone else can shovel pathways for us old folk. I still love watching the white stuff float from the sky and cover the ground. I love a white landscape which brightens the days and illuminates the nights. And, now that I have someone else to take care of all the snow shoveling, I enjoy the white stuff once again. I have been lucky enough throughout my lifetime to live in the northern parts of the USA so that I could experience the cold weather and the snow that comes with the cold weather. I can't imagine what it must be like not having snow to cover your property in the winter. Will death bring the same challenges? Will there be snow in heaven? Will there be someone there to help me to shovel the white stuff once again so I can visit with my heavenly friends? As I grow older I think about things that I never thought of years ago. So, prepare yourself for what's to come. You know it will come at some point in your life. Perhaps we will meet sometime in the future. I hope you remember to bring your shovel with you.....because I'm leaving mine behind! It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
