The legend of the Albatwitch is thought to stem from Germanic folklore or Susquehannock Indian stories. For young and old alike, the Albatwitch is a scary animal, reptile, person, etc., etc., etc. On Saturday, October 9, the legend caused people to gather in the small Lancaster County town of Columbia which is along the mighty Susquenahha River which separates Columbia from the York County town of Wrightsville. The Albatwitch is said to be about 3-5 feet in height with a humanoid shape, covered with black hair and looking scary. My guess is that the day was established to help increase sales in the town of Columbia. You can take the daytime haunted trolley tour for $5 and watch several live musical performances from bands with names such as Dilweed, the Swamp Thumpers, cryptic-themed band Beach Creeper and a hard rock band known as Tang Moon.
The name Albatwitch is Lancaster County's very own legend and has it's roots in both Germanic and Susquehannock Indian lore. Lectures and demonstrations from paranormal authors and researchers were featured. I'm sure if I were a child I would be scared half-to-death of the thing. Actually, if I ever saw it in person, I would probably run the other way. The name "Albatwitch" is a play on the words "apple" and "snitch" and the Albatwitch is said to always carry apples and will throw the cores at trespassers near it's home in Columbia. I'm sure there are many events in small cities and towns all over America that are similar to Albatwitch Day in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Great way to draw out the citizens of the town as well as nearby visitors to celebrate the town and help raise money for the town. If you are ever near Columbia, Pennsylvania in the fall of the year, check out the date for Albatwitch Day and see if you may have the time to visit for the day. I'm sure you will be scared to death if you happen to see it! I have lived a long life due to the fact that I never set eyes on the scary beast. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
