The "So How Do You Shake Hands?" Story

It was an ordinary day.  Just met a friend whom I hadn't seen for many years and reached out to him with a handshake.  He in turn stretched his arm in my direction and we shook hands.  I was a bit disappointed that he didn't grab my hand with a brisk shake as I am accustomed to with most of my friends.  Did you know that your handshake can alter the impression that others have of you?  Evidently there are eight characteristics of a handshake.  They are: completeness of grip, temperature, dryness, strength, duration, vigor, texture and eye contact.  Those that have a firm handshake seem to be more emotional, extroverted and positive than those that are wishy-washy with their handshakes.  Those with loose grips seem to be shy and neurotic.  Well, when I grabbed my friend's hand I presented a firm handshake which hopefully gave him the idea that I was confident and glad to see him.  The handshake is but one of many small habits that reveal a lot about your personality.  A few others are:

The way you walk:  Seems your stroll reveals your personality.  If your stride is quick you are extremely productive and highly logical.  Because of that, you may be looked at as a bit cold and competitive.  If you have good posture and walk with your chest forward, shoulders back and head held high, you are fun to be around, charismatic and socially adept even though you may tend to hog the spotlight.  If your weight is over your legs when you walk you are probably more interested in people than in tasks and more focused on your own personal life than your career.  If you are light on your feet you with your eyes glued to the floor, you are most likely introverted and polite, not wanting to talk much.

Now for the handshake:  If you have a firm handshake you are more emotionally expressive, confident and extroverted while those with a weaker handshake are more shy and neurotic.

As for your email etiquette:  It is said that your email persona and real-life character are strongly related.  Narcissists will use the word I, me and mine more frequently while extroverts tend to be more casual.  As far as spelling and punctuation...if you have poor grammar you usually have a lower IQ than those that write interesting, long emails with academic intelligence.

Body-focused behaviors:  If you are a nail biter or skin picker you more than likely are a perfectionist whose actions are a result of trying to soothe boredom, irritation and dissatisfaction.

Your eating habits tell about your personality also:  Slow eaters are usually people who like to be in control and know how to appreciate life while fast eaters tend to be ambitious and impatient.  The adventurous eater who enjoys new foods and cooking techniques tends to be a thrill-seeker and risk-taker. If you are someone who likes to separate your food into sections on your plate, you're very cautious and detail-oriented in your everyday life.

How punctual are you:  Well, punctual people are more conscientious and agreeable and were perhaps connected to neuroticism early in life.  Those who are late all the time tend to be more laid-back.

Finally, how about your handwriting:  Handwriting experts can detect more than 5,000 personality traits from your writing.  People who write large are people-oriented and attention-seeking where those with small writing are introverted and capable of acute concentration.  If you write with a slant (I realize that writing/cursive may be a thing of the past) it means  you are friendly and impulsive.  Those that write with a left slant are reserved and individualistic.  No slant at all are those that are logical and pragmatic.  If you put a bit too much pressure on the paper with your pen or pencil it means that you have strong emotions and are quick to react while the light-pressure folks are easier going and have the ability to move from place to place.

Well, I could go on and on with other types of personality traits, but if you aren't already feeling good about yourself or wonder how you ever made it in this world, me writing more about you isn't going to help.  Oh, Yeah!  There is one more trait I should tell you about.  How do you hang the toilet paper in your house?  If you hang it in the overhand position with it coming over the top for you to reach, you are probably more dominant while those that hang the paper so it drops down against the wall or cabinet tend to be more submissive.  And...those that forget to replace the toilet paper roll when it is empty are inconsiderate and should be shot!  It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy.
