The "Sculpture" Story
It was an ordinary day. Recently I published a photo that I had taken of the sculpture of Joe Paterno that stands outside of Beaver Stadium in State College, PA. Shortly after posting that I found a story about the people who were involved in the making of that sculpture. Seems that it was made in the town of Ephrata, PA, just down the street from me. Made by two cousins, Yesid Gomez and Wilfer Buitrago, natives of Colombia, South America, who based it on a smaller sculpture by the artist Angelo DiMaria from Reading, PA. I'm sure you have seen it in the news, draped with everything imaginable and surrounded by people paying their respects to JoePa. They made it in 2001 for a cost of $110,000. Weighed 900 pounds and was made of bronze which had a patina applied to it which gives it the very dark color. Shortly after the cousins came to Ephrata in 1998, they met with DiMaria and started the sculpture. Gomez and Buitrago saw Paterno only once in person, from a distance, when he was on the football field during the 2001 homecoming game against Southern Miss shortly after the statue was erected outside Beaver Stadium. Also found out recently that Thomas Beaver III, great-grandson of James Beaver, who was a Civil War hero and former governor of Pennsylvania, works about a quarter of a mile from my house and is pushing to have Beaver Stadium's name changed to Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium. He said in a newspaper article that, "I think Joe's given an awful lot to that school. My great-grandfather also gave most of his life to that school. So I think Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium is a wonderful idea. Both gentlemen had a tremendous impact on Penn State." May be in the near future. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy. PS - photos from the top are sculpture at Beaver Stadium of JoePa, portraiture of James Beaver and view of Beaver Stadium. Following is an interview with the three people who were responsible for the statute of Joe Paterno. I'm sorry if you can't take the annoying ads off the bottom of the You Tube video.
