The "Auto Snowstorm of '93" Story
It was an ordinary day. I just got up and looked outside to see the mess that was in store for me. Seems we just had the second snow storm of 1993 and we have about 10"-12" to shovel. What makes it even worst is that I now have 5 drivers in the family and 5 vehicles. The insurance alone is enough to break the bank, but to have to clear the snow off of all of them is even worst. My oldest son Derek has a Ford Ranger pick-up truck that is parked across the street. He left it in the street when he came home from Villanova University last weekend, since it needed inspected and I was going to take care of that for him. Oh yeah! How about having to keep 5 vehicles running and paying for inspections, gas, and repairs. My youngest son Tad is a high school student and he is driving a Nissan Pulsar that I bought to make it easier for everyone so I wouldn't have to be a taxi all the time. He's parked across the street in front of the Ford Ranger. Our daughter Brynn is a commuter at Millersville and she needs transportation every day so she drives the Subaru Justy that is parked behind my car. The car that I drive is a Ford Aerostar and that is parked directly in front of the house. My wife, who has to work to keep all the vehicles on the road, drives a Chevy Sprint which is parked behind the Justy. Lucky for me that school was called off today so it leaves Tad and me with the chore of shoveling the sidewalk and clearing off all the cars. First we do Carol's car so she can head to work. Then Brynn's car so she can head to Millersville for classes. After a break we tackle the other three, leaving the truck for last, since I don't even have an appointment for inspection yet. Our dog, Arnold, stands on the porch the entire time and watches as we struggle in the snow. Snow is pretty and all that stuff, but not when you have too many vehicles that need cleared of the white stuff. It was another extraordinary day in the life of an ordinary guy. PS - photos from the top are: My Aerostar in the foreground with Derek's red Ford Ranger across the street, Aerostar on the right with the white Justy behind me and Tad's white Pulsar across the street, Arnold looking on while Carol's silver Sprint sits in front of the house.
